Ukrainian Easter is a time of great celebration and cultural significance. One of the most cherished traditions during this time is the creation of intricately decorated Easter eggs, known as pysanky. First and foremost, it’s about spending time in the company of women, a time when grandmothers passed knowledge down to daughters and granddaughters, orally. Pysanky are not your ordinary dyed eggs; they are works of art that require skill, patience, and a deep understanding of symbolism.

The process of creating pysanky begins with carefully selecting a raw egg and cleaning it. Then, using a specialised stylus called a pysachok, the artist applies hot wax in intricate patterns on the egg. The wax acts as a barrier, preventing the dye from penetrating the shell and creating a design that is both beautiful and meaningful.

The designs on pysanky often feature symbols and motifs that hold deep cultural and religious significance. For example, the sun is a common symbol found on Ukrainian Easter eggs, representing life, warmth, and fertility. Other symbols may include flowers, birds, and geometric patterns, each with its own meaning.

The colours used in pysanky also have symbolic meanings. Red represents love and passion, while yellow symbolises the sun and good luck. Green is associated with spring and new beginnings, and blue represents the sky and spirituality. By combining different colours and symbols, artists can convey a wide range of emotions and messages through their pysanky.

Creating pysanky is not only a way to preserve an important cultural tradition, but it is also a means of connecting with ancestors and passing down knowledge to future generations. Many families in Ukraine have their own unique designs and techniques that have been handed down through the years, creating a sense of continuity and pride.

In addition to creating pysanky, Ukrainian Easter is also marked by other traditions such as attending church services, participating in processions, and enjoying festive meals with family and friends. It is a time for reflection, gratitude, and joy.

As we celebrate Ukrainian Easter, let us embrace the rich tapestry of traditions that make this holiday so special. By preserving and honouring these customs, we not only keep our culture alive, but we also foster a sense of unity and belonging within our communities.

For some, the Easter egg is a talisman, for others, a gift, but it’s always something made with love.
Thank you to Lyuda for the implementation, and to Oksana for the idea and organisation. It was motivating, inspiring, and resourceful.
